Why do monsters exist in Greek Mythology?

Monsters arrise from many areas. Fossils certainly might indicate monsters to an intelligent people. Perhaps seeing whales and giant squid could easily create monster stories. People tend to embellish. People like hearing good stories. After some time, monsters are created to entertain whether or not they represent something real. Sometimes the representation is pretty distant from the real creature IMO.
